30th Septmber - Lesson Journal

In this lesson we went through other artists digipak's and analysed them closely taking in what we would like to interoperate in our digipak's and what we would like to steer away from. I analysed numerous digipak's including artists such as 'The Beatles' The Maine' and 'Beady Eye'.

Throughout the two hours of our lesson on Monday morning we filmed ourself on a green screen to help analyse some of the digipak's. I chose one of The Beatles digipak's to analyse on the green screen.. It was a productive lesson as we had to use the green screen and fit out image of the digipak behind us as we spoke. I am currently in the process of editing it and it will be posted soon but I do have my image ready and my piece of analysis filmed.

Mood Board's

We have made mood boards both on the computer and on a giant sheet of paper. In my opinion these mood boards really help us to understand all about our band and what they are like. I feel as if they show how our band 'Tonic' are creative and artistic but at the same time they help it influence their music as they are very passionate about it.This is represented through the mood boards with the use of images of play dough, plasticine and paint splats. Also through the images of instruments and silhouettes of the band playing music.

Tuesday 17th September - Lesson Journal

In today's lesson we created a quick presentations in our groups to show the rest of the class our ideas and to get suggestions from others. Through doing this we managed to get a clear understanding in out heads about our plans for the music video. Also we were given some ideas from other students which will help us in the future when it comes to planning and story boarding our music video.

Digipack Research Task

In today's lesson we researched into artists digipak's which we fell will help influence and give us inspirations when it comes to planning our own digipak. This task has helped a lot as after doing this task I now have a rough idea of what I would like the digipak to look like and the representations of the artist I would like it to have.

Monday 16th September - Lesson Journal.

In the lesson today we learnt that a digipak normally includes...
  • A front Cover
  • The CD
  • Songs
  • Lyrics
  • Band pictures
  • Images relating to song.
After putting some thought into what I would like the digipak to include our group came up with a brainstorm and these are some of the things we would like it to include...

For the final task we had a think about similar artists to our band and some of the things we got inspired by whilst thinking about them and here are the few...

  • Foo fighters - We thought about how they have a similar styles of music to our band, we felt as if they had a similar styles and we really enjoyed their creative funny music videos.
  • Blur - We picked Blur because of their artistic, cartoon like album covers they have. We really liked this and we felt we would like to interoperate this in some sort of way on our digipak's and music video.
  • Oasis - We thought their style would help represent our band as when we picture our band we feel like they are casual males who don't take too much care with the way they dress.
  • The Verve - We felt as if they have an incredibly similar music style to 'Tonic' plus we thought they had a similar appearance too.

Music Video Brief

You have been asked to devise and make a promotional music video for the new act 'Tonic'. As a new act, the record label is keen that the first release appeal to a wide audience and establish an image that is both recognisably unique and appealing to their target audience. with this in mind, their first release will be a cover version and will be used as a platform for future original releases. the record label is happy for this release to be any of the three songs listed below and would like you to choose whichever one you can make a dynamic promo for, as the key thing is to get them exposed!

  • One of the reasons as to why we picked this brief is because we really liked the ideas which came with it. We really thought by picking this one we could let our imaginations run wild with the creativity. We felt as if we wouldn't have to focus mainly on the bands imagine and we could really make use of an arty, creative music video. I really like how we aren't that limited when it came to this band as we knew the conventions for a band like this so we understood the brief incredibly well.

Codes and Conventions of the Indie Genre

Codes and Conventions of the Indie genre.

In the indie genre there are stereotypical things that are included. From the research we have done we have found out that usual camera shots in a music video within the indie genre include plenty of close-up shots of the band, especially the lead singer.

In indie genre music videos the settings tend to be more urban rather then rural as most of the time it goes with their sound and look.

Editing usually focuses on straight cuts as it is very common in the music videos. They are usually used repeatedly. By doing this it suggests a quick paced lifestyle as indie bands are often known to be always on the road.

In music videos of this genre props such as the band instruments are often used. Not all bands use these as some tend to follow a story and not have them playing in front of a camera all the time.

Costume is a big thing as it represents the band and you can tell a lot about them. A typical outfit would probably include black skinny jeans, hats or even black suits.

The lead singer is often positioned at the front of the band due to it being the person the audience will recognise the most.
