Re-Filming car scene - 23/11/13

Today we took to re-filiming the car scene. After editing the first time we felt it needed tot be much more professional looking as the other one moved to fast and was incredibly shaky. This time we ensured the camera stayed still and that we moved the cars slower leaving it to look much smoother once edited. A reason as to why this is a key scene for us is the fact that we wish to bring Goodwins music video theory into our Music Video. One of the key conventions is intertextual referencing which is what our video was lacking. Since we have an indie band we wanted them to reflect on the coolness of being British we wanted to insert a reference which would be easily recognisable as it can be assumed people who listen to this style of music will be able to identify The Italian Job reference. In order to do this we decided to re-shoot the car scene and turn it into a mini car chase scene, using mini coopers to reference the italian job.

An issue we found we were having was with the models and how they were starting to fall apart considering how much we had to move them. They were originally put together with cocktail sticks but as a way we are going to over come this problem we plan on pulling them apart and building them up with wire leaving them much more flexible then before.

Poster Sketches

I thought to get started I should do a couple of rough sketches to see the lay out and get some ideas for my poster down onto paper. Im not sure what my favourite is as I feel I would probably have to play around on photoshop to see how the colours turn out like. I do know that I want it to be like my Digipack though, very creative and full of colour.

Researching into existing print posters

I have briefly looked into existing posters to get a rough idea on what mine should look like.

Digipack Presentation

This is the presentation I plan on showing to the class to gain feedback on what needs to be done and what is looking good.

DigiPak Backgrounds.

For my digipack I have created these backgrounds on photo shop. I have made them all blended and swirly as I wanted to swirl my images into them so they blend in with the back ground. The background I really want to keep is the bluey grey one as I feel this colour helps represents the band more.

Typography

Whilst presenting to the class I asked their feedback on the typography they preferred. The majority of the class chose the bottom one as it came across a lot neater and looked much more professional. This will now be the typography I will take on when improving on my digipack.

Digipak Feedback

This is the feedback I got for my digipak. The things I need to do now I have this feedback includes changing the background I have created and changing the colours. I need photograph more of the band members and finally I need to play around with the panels changing what I put where and making sure it doesn't promote one song more then the whole album.

Codes and Conventions of the Indie Genre

In order to create a Music video of the Indie genre you need to know the codes and conventions. After researching these are what we have found out:

  • Often has a narrative.
  • Sometimes the artist doesn't feature in the video.
  • Occasionally has live performances.
  • Is often Arty, Symbolic, Creative.
  • Instruments are often seen.
  • Often wears black and white.

Filming

On Thursday we found a location with a drum kit and so we managed to film  a couple of scenes.
We forgot the origonal camera we were working with and so we had to use another one which was better quality and a better focus so they animation once edited did look good but this could be a problem when it comes to putting the wholse sequence together as it will be a different resolution compared to the other scenes we have   filmed.

We managed to film three different key scenes which is a plus meaning the day was successful.

Thursday 21st November 2013 - Animatics feedback and viewing.

In todays lesson we did a screening of our animatics. The feedback we received was mostly positive which was incredibly pleasing for us. Most people said to us that they liked the timing and the pace and also they really liked how we included most Goodwin's Analysis.

Assigning roles

Locations

It was decided that my role in the group would be locations considering most of the scenes we have filmed have been at my house and to keep it consistent it would be best to carry on filming here. I have also been arranging the other places we can film as not all can be filmed where i live. As part of my job I have made sure we could film at another persons house who own a drum kit and also managed to find time to film in the music room when there have been no classes.

Inter-textual Reference - Italian Job

After the meeting with Leane we decided to make one of the scenes an inter textual reference with the Italian job. This will also help us apply our Goodwins theory. After filming I decided to get an opinion to see if  you can tell and its obvious.

What are your thoughts on this scene? What do you think it represents?

  •  I really like how the cars go in a line together, I think it looks really cool and neat. It reminds me of the Italian job even if the original didn't go across a fire place.

Schedule

This is our schedule to ensure that we get every bit that we need to film, filmed. This way nothing will get left out and all the footage will be under control.

Tuesday 19th November 2013

Today we had free lessons so we managed to film two important scenes in our music video and then go back to school and edit them. It was a successful day to say the least as we managed to get a lot of work done within about three/four hours.

Group Meeting/Feedback

In this lesson we were set a task to create the animatics for our music video. We completed the task and I found it a successful thing as we now know the timings and we have a rough idea a to what the music video will look like.

The second things we did in the lesson was have a meeting with Leane to see what parts were up to in the flming and also to make sure what we are doing is right. Leane gave us plenty of helpful feedback and now we know what we need to do to  carry on, on the right tracks.

Logo designs.

After gaining our feedback from people when we sent out a questionnaire about our logo we found that our target audience will prefer a logo with a little bit of colour and so we designed multiple logos which included colour and look more visually interesting.

Test shot

We filmed this clip to practice and get a taste as to what out stop motion will look like as a finished product. As a practice shot we have realised that this is will take a long time but after the result we will persist with our idea as we really like the look of it. In the future when we carry on filming but for the actual music video we have learnt that we need to be more careful such as trying not to knock the props over and keep them in the same place so it'll be a lot smoother. Another thing which will make it look a lot smoother will be when we get a tripod. We should also think about better camera angles as well.

This is my presentation to give to the class next Monday so I can receive feedback from the class n my plans for my Digipak.

Changing the target audience!

After we pitched our idea for the Music video to the class the feedback we was given was that we needed to change the target audience as it was previously too broad. Now we have changed the target audience to teens and older teens. The response we got is that we should stick to teens rather then the older generation.

I feel that teens would probably work more compared to an older generation because our band is made up of four guys in the Indie genre who represent 'having fun' and also the 'coolness' of being British. I feel like Four males who don't take themselves too seriously who don't really care what others think of them would have a target audience of teens and older teens because stereotypically all they really care about is drinking and having fun.

Lesson Journal - 4/11/13

In todays lesson we had planned to create a digipak presention to present to the class but as we were a group member down we have delaid it until next week. Instead me and Nicola ventured over to music to photograph some instruments for our digipaks.

Pulp - Comen People

As part of research and planning I have looked into this music video by Pulp. It has broadened my horizons when it comes to Music Videos. This I directly like the other two I have looked into but it is an incredibly good example of how Goodwins theory can be applied to a Music video.

Filming

On Friday 1st November we started filming for our music video. Me and Louise spent two hours making the plasticine figures whilst Nicola made other props. I'm incredibly happy with how the men turned out as I wasn't expecting them to look as realistic as they did. It took us a while to start the process of making the stop motion and we didn't finish as we have hoped but we did spend the whole day on creating what we did and so far I feel it looks really good. I'm very please as to the results we have so far. Now we have created the characters it means we can now get started on finding images to help us on the Digipak process. Here's what our little figures look like...

How do we plan on applying Goodwins theory to our Music Video?

When story boarding we had to take into consideration how we would make sure Goodwin's theory had been applied.

There should be links between lyrics and visuals.

"You've got a nice car" - In rolls a collection of toy cars.

"Who's that guy just hanging at your pad" - Plasticine men in a dolls house.

"I really love you hair do yeah" - Girls hair grows.

Music genres have their own style and iconography

Indie:

Live band performance
Narrative
Creativity/Arty Feel
Minimal coloured clothing

Demands and close up shots

During live performance

Inter textual referencing
